"Fred A. Morris is home from Boonville, where he attended a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Missouri Training School for Boys, Wednesday. Mrs. Morris and the two children accompanied Mr. Morris and the trip was made in his automobile. He says that the roads are in splendid condition and a most enjoyable trip was had."

"A $475,000 bond issue for the construction of a new centrally located elementary school failed to get even a simple majority in a Community R-6 special election yesterday. Total vote was 450 against the proposal and 323 in favor. The election yesterday was the third regarding a plan for a building for children from four communities. Only Benton City came close to giving the plan a two-thirds majority. The results: Laddonia, 113 for, 255 against; Martinsburg, 86 for, 100 against; Rush Hill, 56 for, 55 against; Benton City, 68 for, 40 against."

"For the second consecutive year, Miss Columbia was chosen to represent Missouri in the Miss America Scholarship Pageant in Atlantic City in September. Heather Dawne Smith, 21, won the title of Miss Missouri 1988 at the 1988 Miss Missouri Scholarship Pageant on Saturday, before a full house at the Missouri Military Academy Field House. This is the 19th consecutive year the pageant has been held in Mexico. More than $11,000 was awarded at the pageant. Miss Smith received a $4,700 cash scholarship, a bouquet of roses, an official crown and trophy, wardrobe and a trip to Atlantic City. First runner-up was Crystal Smith; second runner-up was Kristine Kelly; and third runner-up was Leslie Weedman."

"Sign up for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Crop Disaster Program is now underway at the Audrain County Farm Services Agency Office. Judith Warren, director of the county FSA office, said under the program producers will be reimbursed for qualifying crop production and quality losses to crops (other than tobacco) for either the 2001 or 2002 crops."
