The Mexico Dawgs Special Olympics athletes participated at the 2013 State Summer Games held in Columbia May 30-June 2. The athletes participated in a variety of events including Track and Field, Bowling, and Basketball. They brought home multiple awards from a fourth place ribbon up to a gold medal for first.
Twenty-two of the Dawgs athletes participated in Track and Field events at State Games, while five of the other athletes participated in Bowling. The five athletes who particpated in State Bowling were Laura Large, Kim Anderson, Ronnie Broeker, Connie Hinds, and Donna Davis. The Track and Field competition was held at Hickman High School, while the bowling competition was held at Town and Country Lanes bowling alley in Columbia. The Mexico Dawgs also had two 3 on 3 basketball teams go to State Games.
Nine athletes participated in the Basketball Individual Skills portion at State Games. All basketball competitions were held at the University of Missouri Student Recrea-tion Complex on the MU campus.
After being awarded gold medals at the 2013 State Summer Games the following individuals were chosen to attend the upcoming Special Olympics Sports Camp that is held at MMA later this month. These individuals were Laura Large, Trista Clifton, Ronnie Broeker, Jason Coffman, and Zach Head. This gives them the chance to be chosen to advance to National Games in the summer of 2014.
Coach Alisha Glasgow, who was awarded Northeast Area Outstanding Coach of the Year, was also chosen as a Sports Manager to attend National Games.
