Starts at 6 p.m. Friday
The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Audrain County will be held Friday starting at 6 p.m. and continue through 1:30 Saturday morning.
This year the event is moving back to town. Last year it was held at the Audrain County 4-H Fairgrounds. This year's event will be held behind Mexico High School on the asphalt between the school and the new entrance to the football field. Parking will be available in the north and south parking lots. There will be no bleacher seating, so those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. A track will be set up for the survivors/caregivers walk and for others who want to walk throughout the night.
The opening ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. where special awards will be presented. This will be followed by the survivor walk at 6:30. Registration is still open for survivors who want to participate.
The survivor lap is for all cancer survivors to celebrate their victory over cancer and to show there is proof cancer can be defeated.
Once the survivors complete their first lap they are joined by caregivers for another lap.
Many activities have been planned for the event including several teams who will be raising money toward the goal of $85,000.
In addition to the teams, there will be live music and a basket auction. Kelly Stanford will perform at 7:30 p.m., the basket auction will be held at 8:30 p.m., and live music will also be held at 10:30 p.m. by Legacy.
A sentimental and emotional time will take place with the lighting of the luminaria. Votive candles will be lighted in memory or support of a loved one. The luminaria may also be personalized. The lighting will take place at approximately at 9 p.m. Anyone who has not purchased a luminaria for $5 may still do so at the J.B. and Greeta B. Arthur Cancer Center or Friday night until 8 p.m.
At midnight fireworks will be set off from the baseball field before the closing ceremony at 1:30 a.m. Saturday.
