  • Gloria was born Oct. 21, 1917 died Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at her home.
    Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Saturday at the Arnold Funeral Home. Burial will follow at East Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation is Saturday from 10:00 a.m. till service time.
    She was born in Elston, MO, the daughter of William and Anna (Lister) Tripp. She grew up in Missouri and graduated from New Bloomfield MO High School in 1937 and Merriwood Cosmotology School in 1938. She worked from 1938 – 1940 at the California Beauty Salon in Mexico. On January 28, 1940 in Mexico, she married Anderson Mitchell. They were married 43 years. He preceded her in death August 27, 1983.
    Gloria was a member of the First Christian Church in Mexico since 1943. She taught in the Nursery and Kindergarten class and started the Junior Church with Rev. George Wraith and Rev. Terry Moore. She was an active member of the CWF. She was a CYF and Choir Leader in her church. She was also a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader for both of her daughters. At one time she had two troops. She was a Den Mother in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for over 25 years, receiving the Silver Fawn Award in 1972, the highest award given in Scouting.
    In 1984, after her husbands death, she and her granddaughter Jamie Deardorff started a babysitting service in her home. At that time she became Grandma Mitchell to all who entered her home. She loved children of all ages and continued to babysit until her death.
    She is survived by two daughters, Sue (Jim) Deardorff and Betty Ann (A.D., Jr.) Spurling of Mexico and one son, Andy (Mary Beth) Mitchell of Leawood, KS. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, Chad (Debbie) Spurling, Craig (Nora) Spurling, Tim Deardorff, Jamie Deardorff all of Mexico, MO, Charla (Jose) Urioste of Merida Yucatan, Mexico, Will, Kate, Ellie, and Anna Mitchell all of Leawood, Kansas. She is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren, Ryan, Matt, Eric, Makayla, and Caitlyn Spurling of Mexico, MO, Marina and Mitchell Urioste of Merida Yucatan, Mexico and Amanda (Jason) Clough of Columbia, MO.
    She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Anderson Mitchell and six brothers, James, Charles, Leonard, Percy, Glenn, and William Tripp and three sisters, Beatrice Wallace, Eula Tripp, and Fern Giesing.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the First Christian Church Stained glass window fund.
    In honor of Gloria, everyone is encouraged to wear red.
