On Friday I stated in this blog that the Cardinals were about to begin their most important road trip of the year.  Well, it ain’t going so good.  The Cardinals were swept over the weekend by the Atlanta Braves wasting some pretty good pitching performances along the way.  Joe Kelly in particular pitched a gem of a ball game on Saturday making only one bad pitch the whole day.  The Cardinals bats were pretty well silenced by the Braves pitching.  That will have to change starting tonight as the Cardinals are in Pittsburgh to begin a five game series with the Pirates including a double header tomorrow.  Luckily, the Pirates didn’t gain any ground over the weekend as they had their own problems with the Miami Marlins but they didn’t lose any ground either so this five game series is literally for the NL Central lead.  Obviously there are still two months left in the season but as noted on Friday the Cardinals are playing the teams they will need to beat in the playoffs and this weekend’s sweep by the Braves has to be considered a major disappointment.  The Cardinals have always struggled in Pittsburgh and they can’t afford to allow that trend to continue.

The Kansas City Royals made it back to the .500 mark after completing their sweep of the Chicago White Sox.  Unfortunately, for the Royals they are still 7 games behind the Tigers who seem to win just enough to maintain that distance between themselves and the Royals.  Interestingly I have seen the Royals and White Sox play twice this year with both games coming on a Saturday night.  No, I don’t have a life in case you are wondering, I’m totally dedicated to this blog.  Anyway, the Royals won both those games 1 to 0.  They Royals have the day off today before beginning a three game series against the Twins in Minnesota tomorrow.

Ryan Newman fulfilled a lifelong dream by winning at what he considers his home track yesterday.  Newman who grew up not far from Indianapolis won the NASCAR Brickyard 400 yesterday.  I didn’t see the race but it appears Newman raced well the entire day.

I’m not sure what got into the United States men’s soccer team but they certainly are playing well right now.  They won the Gold Cup yesterday by beating Panama in the finals.  I’m not sure what the Gold Cup is but it appears to be a tournament involving teams for North, Central and South America and apparently is very important.  This puts the United States in a good position heading into next summer’s World Cup which takes place in Brazil.

The Truman State Bulldogs will participate in their first ever Great Lakes Valley Conference football media day on Wednesday.  It will be interesting to see where the BLVC ranks the Bulldogs for the upcoming season but it will certainly be higher than the MIAA has for the past several years.

Longtime readers of this blog, assuming there are longtime readers of this blog, will remember that I have talked before about FKS Fitness which is the premier training facility in town and also where yours truly works out.  Tomorrow night on ABC one of their clients will be revealed on Extreme Home Makeover’s Weight Loss Edition and I would encourage you to tune into the show and meet this incredible young lady.  Nate and Veeve Holtz should certainly be proud of the job they have done and certainly deserve any accolades they receive.  We’ll have more to say about that in future blogs.

We’ll be back on Wednesday with another blog so I hope you will check us out again then.  Thanks as always for supporting this and all the other blogs on this site.

Have a wonderful week!
