  • MHS Junior Danielle Baumgartner pitched 4 perfect innings and recorded 10 strikeouts as the Bulldogs beat the Marshall Owls 16-0, Wednesday night at Gallop Field.
"We like what we saw tonight," head coach Christina Gerber said after the game. "This was a great place to start the season."
The team looked equally strong behind the plate. Junior Ali Mudd led the Bulldogs off with a single to start a seven-run first inning in which the team used aggressive base running to capitalize on pitching errors from the Owls. Junior Abby Dick hit a bases-loaded, two-RBI single and Freshman Ashlee Woodruff hit a sacrifice ground-ball to score another run.
After a scoreless second inning, Junior Haley Test led the Bulldogs off in the third with a double deep to center. Test then scored on a single by Mudd. After advancing to third, Mudd scored on a sacrifice fly by Junior Karen Baker. Senior Madison White hit an RBI single and Dick scored batted in two more to bring the Mexico lead to 12.
After back-to-back singles by Woodruff and Test in the fourth inning, Baker hit a two-RBI triple before Baumgartner drove a two-run home run over the left field wall to end the game 16-0 on the mercy rule.
"It felt really awesome to hit a walk-off home run in the first game of the year," Baumgartner said. "All the girls did a really great job tonight and it was a fun way to start the season."
The win starts the Bulldogs at 1-0 (1-0 NCMC).
In junior varsity action, the Bulldogs were equally dominant, scoring 10 runs in the first inning and five in the second to beat the Owls 15-2. Freshman Kenzie Robnett and Sophomore Laura Fischer had two hits each while Freshman DJ Holman had one.
