  • Senior Lane Ray shot 87 and senior Kaylee Stone shot 91 over 18 holes to take first and third place and lead the Mexico High School golfers to a decisive victory in the Paris Invitational Wednesday.
"Last year we won this same tournament with a team score of 403," coach Lindsey Yancey said. "This year we won it again with a team score of 383. The girls played really well and brought in a team score that I wasn't sure I'd see as a coach."
The Bulldogs enjoyed a 20 stroke lead over second-place Harrisburg, anchored by strong performances from juniors Jessica Slagle and Abby Gooch and sophomore Erika Smiley. Slagle shot 102 and Gooch 103, missing the top 10 by just one and two strokes respectively. In the first tournament of her career, Smiley recorded a score of 122.
"This served as her first experience playing in a tournament and shooting 18 holes in one day," Yancey said. "I was especially pleased to see that Erika improved from her front to back nine, which is definitely something to be proud of."
Last year, this tournament proved to be a litmus test for the Bulldogs. After winning both the team and individual championships in Paris, they went on to take second in the NCMC and district tournaments.
The team travels to Moberly Monday, where they will face the defending conference and district champion Spartans as well the Centralia Panthers.
