Strong performances by both teams

The MHS cross-country and softball teams had strong performances Saturday as both competed at home.
Cross-country brought home team championships in both the boys and girls races at the Green Estates. The girls team was led by senior Jami Brandow, who took individual first-place honors covering the 5,000 meter course in 20:53. Sophomore Malik Holman won the boys race in 17:53.
"There were many successes today," coach John Wilbers said. "The kids are awesome for their accomplishment today and how each ran and competed."
In the girls race, sophomore Leslie Fischer finished fourth in 22:01, junior Madeleine Prince finished eighth in 23:00, freshman Amber Shaw finished ninth in 23:03 and senior Keagan Riddick rounded-out scoring for the Bulldogs in seventeeth, clocking 24:37.
Senior Alex Shaw was the second Bulldogs runner to cross the finish line in the boys race, clocking 18:33 on his way to fifth place. Junior Spencer Freeman was ninth in 19:15, senior Sam Fayad 11th in 19:39 and junior Raven Twenter 17th in 20:35. Sophomore Micah Gwinn and junior Alex Hamilton were the sixth and seventh runners for the Bulldogs, finishing in 22nd and 23rd with times of 20:56 and 20:57.
The dual wins were a great start for the Bulldogs who hope to win the district and conference championships for both teams. The boys team has finished either first or second in the district championship and qualified for the state championship the past three years. The girls team took third in the district championship last year, narrowly missing the state championship.
Sophomore Jordan Jones won the JV race in 20:59 to lead the boys to a team victory. Sophomore Darrin Taylor was second in 21:12, sophomore Logan Anselmi fourth in 22:21, freshman Austin Loyd fifth in 22:37, senior Bradley Hutchinson tenth in 23:25. Senior Caleb Phipps rounded out scoring in the JV race, taking 11th place in 23:41.
Mexico cross-country next competes Saturday at the Forest Park Cross Country Festival in St. Louis.
The MHS softball team moved to 3-1 (2-1 NCMC) after beating the Bowling Green Bobcats 5-0 at Gallop Field.
The Bulldogs were scoreless until the fourth inning when junior Abby Dick hit a one-run RBI to score senior Victoria Shaw. Junior Karen Baker and freshman DJ Aaron recorded a run each in fourth.
Sophomore Laura Fischer led the Bulldogs off in the fifth inning with a double. Fischer was advanced to third by a single from junior Danielle Baumgartner and scored on a sacrifice fly by Baker to bring Mexico's lead to four.
After hitting a single to start the sixth inning, freshman Ashlee Woodruff scored on an RBI-double from junior Haley Test.
Baumgartner was the winning pitcher, recording nine strikeouts, three walks, and three hits. The Bulldogs compete again Wednesday at Moberly.
