The temperatures may have been warm Saturday, but that did not discourage area children from bringing out their fishing poles and trying their luck at catching "the big one" during the annual Fishing Derby sponsored by the Mexico City Parks and Recreation Department.
The young anglers were competing for the biggest fish or catching the most fish. The fish ranged from one-ounce to more than four pounds.
Some of the young fishermen were happy to catch a fish, but did not want to touch it once it was on their hook. Some of the fish landed on the ground, as a child would drop it when it began to wiggle in his/her hands. There were a few kids who did not catch anything but were still having fun along with their parents.
Results include: six years and under – biggest fish, Jyllian Whitworth, two-pound bass; and most fish caught went to Cody Wilson with eight fish weighing a combined one pound, 2 ounces.
Seven to 10 years of age: biggest fish was awarded to Shane Schoneboom for his 11-ounce bass; and most fish by Caitlynne Martin who caught nine fish weighing a combined 1 pound, 4.5 ounces.
Eleven years and up: biggest fish, Dillon Benton with a bass weighing four-pounds, 2 ounces; and most fish went to Jesse Hirsch who caught 12 fish weighing a combined 1 pound, 11 ounces.
