  • Mexico eighth graders opened their football season with a rout of the Hannibal Pirates, 44-0 Thursday night at Hawthorne Heights.
"Anytime you beat Hannibal at football it is a good night," head coach David Okenfuss said. "We still have a few areas we need to work on but overall I am very pleased with the effort on both sides of the ball."
Michael White ran the ball 43 yards, 41 yards, ten yards and five yards to score four touchdowns for the Bulldogs. Kellen Ekern added a two-yard run and Cam Holman a 40 yard reception to get Mexico into the endzone twice more. The Bulldogs completed four two-point conversions thanks to the efforts of White, Deion Wayman and Cam Baumgartner.
Holman also recorded an interception, Ekern recovered a fumble and Myron Mahaney stripped the ball from the Hannibal quarterback as the Bulldogs forced three turnovers.
The seventh grade boys did not fare as well as the Pirates beat them 50-0. Both teams return to action Tuesday when they host the Boonville Pirates.
Eighth grade volleyball started the season with a loss Thursday, dropping two games to the Troy Trojans 10-25, 21-25.
"Despite losing their first match of the season, the girls worked well with one another and played tough both games," heach coach Amy Boedeker said. "We faced a team that could hit really well, our girls had several really good digs to keep the game going."
The eighth graders next play Tuesday at Boonville.
The seventh graders opened their season with a win, taking two games against the Trojans 25-11, 25-14. "The girls were very enthusiastic going into their first game," Boedeker said. "The enthusiasm helped them pull off their first win. We saw a lot of positive things and the girls served really well both games."
The team returns to the court Monday at the Kingdom Christian Academy in Fulton.
