Rev. Robert Dewayne Stoddard, 90, of Wellsville, passed away at 9:25 P.M., Tuesday, September 17th at Golden Living Center/Gamma Road Lodge in Wellsville.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, September 21st at the Myers Funeral Home in Wellsville. Rev. Dale Kirkendoll will officiate. Serving as organist will be Sterling Holbrook. Soloist will be Karen Holbrook.
Burial will be in the Wellsville Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 P.M., Friday, September 20th at the funeral home.
Mr. Stoddard was born February 10, 1923, in St. Catherine, Missouri, a son of Edward Windfield and Stella Mae Shephard Stoddard.
On October 13, 1945, in Macon, Missouri, he married Clara Louise Dorr. She preceded him in death on November 21, 2010.
Robert was a 1942 graduate of New Cambria High School. He continued his education at the Seminary Extension in Kirksville from 1958-1959 and then proceeded with a Seminary Study Course in Decatur, Illinois.
Robert and Clara had lived at their home on Clay Street since 1988. Prior to that, they lived at the Hopewell Baptist Church parsonage in rural Wellsville from 1960-1988.
Rev. Stoddard had ministered most all of his life. On August 9, 1955 he surrendered to preach at Puzzle Ridge Baptist Church. He then became licensed to preach on December 28, 1955. Taking his first assignment, he began preaching at Pleasant View Baptist Church on February 2, 1957, preaching until March 23, 1959 when he went to the First Baptist Church in Purdin. From there, he went to Everson Ville Baptist Church until January 1, 1960. Most of his ministry was done at Hopewell Baptist Church in rural Wellsville where he was the minister from May 1, 1960 – March 1, 1988. After that extended time, he went to the Farber Baptist Church from January 1, 1994 – March 26, 2006 before taking his final job at the First Baptist Church in Wellsville from March 1, 2006 until his retirement on September 19, 2006.
Robert had previously served on the Missouri Baptist Convention from 1965-1984. He was a Moderator for Bear Creek Association from 1965-1984. Robert was a former Association Mission Development Director in 1986, Association Evangelism Director from 1974-1975, Association Sunday Director in 1981, served on the Louisiana Divisional Board from 1971-1983 and the Central Missouri Baptist Mission Board from 1998-2001. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wellsville.
He enjoyed crappie fishing, hunting and woodworking. Most of all, he enjoyed the time he spent with his family and the fellowship he had with his church and parishioners.
Robert is survived by his son, Billy Don Stoddard, of Revere; daughter-in-law, Patricia Stoddard, of Wellsville; grandson, Barry Lee Stoddard and girlfriend Krista Newby, of Columbia and brother and sister-in-law, Jerome and Helen Stoddard, of Watkins, Iowa; in addition to several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by parents; wife, Clara Louise Stoddard; son, Bobby Lee Stoddard; five brothers, Gilbert Stoddard, Marion Stoddard, Leslie Stoddard, Russell Stoddard and Clifford Stoddard and four sisters, Elizabeth Trippeer, Margaret Thedium, Geraldine Ford and Velma Mallett Memorial contributions are suggested to the Wellsville Fire Department - Bobby Stoddard Memorial Fund or the First Baptist Church in Wellsville c/o Myers Funeral Home, 203 East Bates Street, Wellsville, Missouri 63384.
