  • Despite the cold rain falling, the smiles were warm, the laughter was joyous and genuine, and the participants were eager to celebrate. The event was a Cake and Ice Cream Celebration sponsored by The Dream Factory of Audrain County in recognition of its 200th dream come true. Past recipients and their families joined with volunteers and the public to recognize this significant milestone.
Mala Kitson, now age 10, is a past recipient who attended the celebration. At age 6, Mala suffered from a craniopharyngioma, a serious type of brain tumor requiring 29 different radiation treatments. Mala’s dream was a trip to Kansas City to attend a Justin Bieber concert.  James Kitson, Mala’s father, happily stated that she is fully recovered and doing well.
Also in attendance was recent recipient Bryson Regot, 5. A charismatic blonde-haired young man with an infectious smile and laugh, Bryson has spina bifida, a birth defect that hampers his movements. In June 2013, Bryson visited the Universal Studios theme park in Florida, and was able to swim with dolphins. He spoke excitedly about his trip and earnestly thanked the volunteers for their work.
The Dream Factory of Audrain County also took the opportunity to present committee members Robin Biggers, Lisa Silver, Paula Haythorn, and Judy May with their 5-year service pins. Bonnie Silvey, current trip coordinator and original chapter member, who received her 25-year pin at the recent national convention, was also recognized. “It’s a great blessing to see the look on the children’s faces when they get their dream,” Silvey said.
Current local committee membership stands at 14 members. Anyone interested in joining or assisting the committee is asked to contact Helen Golden at 581-2417.
Since its creation in 1991, The Dream Factory of Audrain County has raised almost $500,000 in its efforts to bring hope and happiness to critically or chronically ill children aged 3-18. The local chapter is an extension of the national The Dream Factory organization founded in 1980 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. There are 36 chapters nationwide and The Dream Factory of Audrain County is one of 8 chapters in Missouri. The local organization funds itself through memorials, donations, and fundraisers such as their ‘Chairs 4 Charity’ and Golf Scramble Tournament held each spring and fall respectively.
