  • Bulldogs soccer slipped to 8-6 after a 2-0 loss on the road to the Marshall Owls Tuesday.
"Marshall has made a statement that they are the better team. After this meeting, they have scored a combined six goals against us this year, compared to our zero," head coach Grant Johnston said. "In convincing fashion, they have shown that they are more talented than we are. There is no other way to look at it, we just got downright outplayed."
The Owls' first goal came midway into the first half, after defensive miscues left the Mexico goal exposed. Another goal ten minutes into the second left the Bulldogs in a 2-0 hole from which they were unable to climb out.
Johnston hopes the team can learn from the loss as district play grows closer.
"Our team needs to understand that our work rate needs to improve; the more talented team does not always win the games," Johnston said. "We are not the most talented team, we need to out-work opponents in order to win. If we want to win, our will-to-win needs to be better and that goes for every individual on the team. Marshall is a district opponent, and they have no reason to be afraid of us when November rolls around. We have supplanted ourselves as an average team. We do not strive for average."
The Bulldogs look to bounce back Thursday, when they host former NCMC foes, the Helias Crusaders.
