  • Bulldogs softball was one out from securing another victory over the Kirksville Tigers in the second-round of district play Thursday in Moberly. The Bulldogs led by one run in the seventh, but the Tigers had two runners on when they put a ball into left-center field, dropping between outfielders and rolling nearly all the way to the fence. The hit gave the Tigers enough time to bring two runners home, securing the walk-off victory and ending Mexico's season.
"Tonight was a tough loss," head coach Christina Gerber said. "We came out early and scored, but couldn't finish it."
The Bulldogs end a strong season with a final record of 15-8 (9-3 NCMC) with a second-place conference finish and four players earning all-conference honors.
Junior Danielle Baumgartner pitched for the Bulldogs, she recorded 13 strikeouts, three walks and four hits against the rival Tigers.
Mexico's first run came in the first inning. Sophomore Laura Fischer reached on a single before being brought home on an RBI-single by Baumgartner to give the Bulldogs an early advantage.
Kirksville's defense wouldn't let the Bulldogs gain another hit until the fourth inning, an RBI-double by junior Abby Dick. Baumgartner led with a walk and sophomore Sydnee Playter came in as a courtesy runner before Dick brought her home.
The Bulldogs would score one more in the sixth. After drawing another walk, Baumgartner was once again replaced by Playter as a runner. This time, freshman DJ Aaron would come through, hitting another RBI-double for the Bulldogs, giving the team a three run advantage.
The Bulldogs held the Tigers scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, giving up one run. The Tigers would rally in the seventh to score three and earn the come-from-behind win.
The Tigers face Centralia tomorrow in the district championship game.
The top-seeded Panthers defeated the Moberly Spartans 7-0 to earn a berth into the championship game. Baylee Douglass improved to 17-1 with the victory, striking out 15 while allowing just two hits and no walks.
Baylee Chitwood was 2-3 with a single, double and two RBIs. Douglass was 3-4 with one RBI.
