After a long week of competition, two Mexico tennis players earned all-district honors Saturday in Fulton.
Senior Nandita Thapar and sophomore Shyann Gordon finished third and fourth respectively, facing each other in their final matches of the season and narrowly missing the opportunity to continue their seasons at the sectional championship.
The Bulldogs began district play Monday, traveling to Palmyra to face the Tigers during the team portion of the tournament. In doubles play, senior Nutcha Pongsuea and sophomore Julianne Wortmann defeated Palmyra's Casey Johnston and Katie Easley while sophomore Karrie Ahrens and Emily Polacek beat Kerolyn Wright and Olivia Hamilton.
Gordon came away with the lone singles victory, beating Johnston in two sets.
The Bulldogs fell to the Tigers 6-3 to end the team's season, but still had the opportunity to compete in individual and doubles at Fulton in Saturday.
In Fulton, Pongsuea and Wortmann represented the team in doubles, falling in the first round.
Thapar earned a bye during the first round of individual play and faced Southern Boone's Kristen Callahan during the second round, winning in two sets. Thapar lost to Barat Academy's Jennifer Fabian in two sets, 7-5, 6-4 to earn a place in the third-place game.
Gordon defeated Duchesne's Taylor Slattery in two sets during the first round and took down Barat Academy's Natalie Barr in two more before falling to the eventual district champion, Fulton's Suzie Whitmar in the semi-finals, 6-1, 6-3.
Thapar came out on top in the head-to-head with teammate, 10-8.
Thapar and Gordon both earned all-district honors for their efforts, but only the top two individuals move on to the sectional championship.
