  • Gene Rudd, 77, a retired physical oceanographer, passed away September 13, 2013 at his home in Alexandria, Virginia after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was the son of Ewell and Hazel (Crockett) Rudd. He was born February 24, 1936 in Mexico, Mo. at the home of his maternal grandparents, Ray and Myrtle Crockett.
    A memorial service was held September 20, 2013 at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Alexandria where he had been a very active member since 1969. His ashes were scattered in the Prayer Garden on the grounds of the church at a private gathering of his family.
    He grew up in Auxvasse, Mo and graduated from Auxvasse High School in 1954 and from Central College in 1958 (now Central Methodist University) in Fayette, Mo. He then attended graduate school majoring in physics at the University of Maryland in College Park while working at the Naval Research Lab (NRL) in Washington D. C. As research escalated at NRL in the days following Sputnik, he gave up graduate school to focus full time on his work. Over the course of time he rose to the position of group leader. His work often took him to sea for extended periods to conduct experiments and to collaborate with leading institutions in oceanography. His work on methods to characterize the physical structure of the ocean was published in the journal, "Science."
    On July 8, 1961 he married Nora Gene Strawn at Washington Street United Methodist Church in Alexandria where they had met in the Singles Sunday School Class.
    Gene is survived by his wife, Nora, of 52 years and two children Robert (Michele) Rudd of Livermore, California and Rebecca Rudd (Rich) Barry of Chevy Chase, Maryland and five grandchildren, Finnian, Rowan and Madeleine Barry and Susannah and Sarah Rudd and his sister, Carol (Bob) Burnett of Marietta, Georgia. He is also survived by a special cousin, Margaret Quinlan Hopkins of Boonville, Mo. He was predeceased by his parents and one brother, Dale Ray Rudd.
    In lieu of flowers memorials were made in his memory to the Wesley United Methodist Church. 8412 Richmond Ave., Alexandria, VA 22309. Cards may be sent to the family in care of the church.
