Boys take second

The MHS cross-country girls finished first at the NCMC championship Saturday in Boonville.
"This was a really tight race; every minute of the thing was an all-out, max-effort, intense run for the win," head coach John Wilbers said. "The girls team was running at full strength for the first time since early in the season. Our girls looked incredibly healthy, strong, and bold during the race."
The girls were led by senior Jami Brandow's second place finish in 20:24.78. Junior Madeleine Prince covered the 5,000 meter course in 21:44.21, good for seventh place and sophomore Leslie Fischer earned eighth place with a time of 21:48.14.
The boys team was unable to continue their streak of conference championships, finishing a close second behind the Moberly Spartans..
"Coming into this day, Moberly and Hannibal were known to be our closest competitors and eager to take the title," Wilbers said. "The prediction proved true as these three teams dominated the race throughout the 5k. At various times Mexico was winning, and at other times Moberly. Truly you could see the runners laying out everything at full throttle to try and take the competition."
Sophomore Malik Holman continued his impressive season by taking first overall in 16:36.72. Also earning all-conference honors were senior Alex Shaw in sixth, junior Spencer Freeman in 13th and senior Sam Fayad in 14th.
"Incredibly, Moberly was able to put nearly three runners between our number one and number two runners, giving them just enough edge to take the title," Wilbers said. "However, Mexico still had four of our top five earn All-Conference titles and took a very respectable second place at the NCMC."
In the boys junior varsity race, sophomore Darrin Taylor finished first in 19:31.92. Junior Lauren Ransom won the girls JV race, covering the course in 26:34.92
Mexico cross-country returns to competition tonight, hosting the Mexico Autumn Classic at Green Estates Park.
