Mexico freshman and sophomore football beat the Fulton Hornets 34-8 Monday on the road to end the season 5-3.
"I am really proud of all of our boys, they stuck with each other and played hard all year," coach Adam Barnett said. "After losing our first three games we went on to win the last five. There were a lot of positive things that happened this year for the boys and they should be very proud of their accomplishments. This was a good season and a positive step forward for our varsity football program."
Wesley Oetting had a ten-yard touchdown reception on the Bulldogs' first possession, Tanner Smith completed the two-point conversion to take the lead 8-0.
The Mexico defense then held the Hornets a three-and-out to let the offense back on the field. JW Turner had a ten-yard TD run to make the score 14-0.
The Hornets scored their lone touchdown on the next possession and converted two points to make the score 14-8.
The rest of the game saw two touchdowns from Trevor Plumber and one from Brit Wilson while Smith completed another two-point conversion to round out the Bulldogs' scoring.
While the Mexico offense was explosive, the Bulldogs' defense proved to be just as problematic for the Hornets.
"Our defense played really well the whole game. Fulton had the one big play pass play for a score. After that our defense shut them down, coming up with big plays at key moments" Barnett said. "Zach Groves had a big interception on the three yard line. The D-line did a good job holding the line of scrimmage and keeping blockers off of our linebackers, which allowed them to flow and make tackles."
