Bulldogs soccer had another historic game Thursday night, breaking the program record for wins in a season with a 4-2 victory over the Boonville Pirates.
The win came on the same night that the Bulldogs celebrated senior night, honoring Gabe Marley, Christian McKeown, Colin Cosby, Tyler Warmbrodt, Aron Manns, Kyle Bailey, Lake Bailey, Jesse Craft and Kamden Ekern.
"Going into the game, I wanted this to be something special for our seniors as senior night is supposed to be. I knew they all deserved to start, but at the same time we had a greater goal, we wanted to beat our conference opponent," head coach Grant Johnston said. "I was a little bit nervous about their concentration for this game considering all the festivities and distractions. I'm proud to say that when the first whistle blew, they put everything aside and put forth a winning effort."
The last time the Bulldogs and Pirates met, the game remained scoreless through two overtime periods, finally being settled in the Bulldogs' favor in penalty kicks.
This time the Bulldogs jumped to a 2-0 lead lead midway through the second half, with goals by McKeown and sophomore Brock Fuemmeler.
Freshman Miguel Vega added a goal early in the second half to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 advantage before the Pirates scored their first goal of the evening.
Fuemmeler clinched the win with his second goal of the night in the 68th minute, driving up the left sideline and cutting to the center of the field before faking a cross from the left post and chipping the ball over the goalkeeper's head.
Cosby, McKeown and Vega contributed to the scoring with an assist each.
"In the end this game isn't about any individuals, but more about the celebration of our seniors who have given everything they have this year," Johnston said. "We look forward to that continued effort, as we have plenty of season remaining and we have greater goals to accomplish into November."
During junior varsity action, the Bulldogs played the Pirates to a draw 1-1.
The Bulldogs look to improve on their record setting season Tuesday when they travel to conference rival Fulton.
