  • Bulldogs soccer couldn't defeat the Fulton Hornets in regulation Tuesday, but it took less than two minutes to secure the overtime victory.
Just 73 seconds into overtime, senior Christian McKeown finished a cross from sophomore Brock Fuemmeler to secure the 3-2 victory over the rival Hornets. The win improves the Bulldogs to 13-9, ensuring that for the first time in program history, the Bulldogs will finish the season with a winning record.
"With three straight wins, we are generating some momentum heading into district play," head coach Grant Johnston said. "We plan to build this momentum through Thursday when we play in Moberly."
The Bulldogs fell into a scoring deficit early, with the Hornets leading 2-0 at half. The Bulldogs fought back in the second half however; McKeown deflected a free kick for one goal and Fuemmeler finished a McKeown assist for another, tying the game and forcing overtime.
Although the stats will remember Fuemmeler's and McKeown's contributions, the win was a team effort.
"Christian and Brock continue to work off of each other, producing on the offensive end and filling out the stat sheet. Although, what is sometimes overlooked is the events leading up to the ball hitting the back of the net," Johnston said. "There have been continuous extra efforts given by numerous players that allow them to do what they do best, score goals. Hard work doesn't show up on the individual stat sheet, but especially for a team like us, it shows up on the scoreboard."
In junior varsity action, the Hornets beat the Bulldogs 2-0.
Bulldogs soccer will have one more chance to improve the team record when they travel to Moberly Thursday. The Bulldogs last faced the Spartans on Oct. 22, when they came away with a 2-0 victory.
