  • Bulldogs soccer finished the regular season 13-10 Thursday night after losing to the Moberly Spartans 3-0 on the road.
The Bulldogs had won their previous three matches, including a 2-0 shutout against the Spartans, but were unable to finish the regular season with a win.
"They played a much better game than us, dominating on both ends of the field," head coach Grant Johnston said. "The way the game was played was a far shot from our first meeting against them, when we won 2-0. Although we really wanted to get that fourth straight win, we have greater visions in mind. We need to put this performance aside and focus on what's ahead, the district tournament."
The Spartans scored their first goal within seven minutes of play, and netted the other two within the first half.
"Both of these goals were a consequence of poor awareness from our defense. We were scored on from a back post header from a man who wasn't marked, and a miscommunication between a couple of our defenders and goal keepers gave Moberly an open net to pass the ball in," Johnston said. "Luckily, these are something we can easily fix with a little more focus and communication. The last two goals were scored not because they had more talent, but because of our failures."
The Bulldog offense had few opportunities to even the score, and failed to capitalize on the ones they got.
"Our guys need to keep in mind that it is not just the defensive four that are responsible for keeping the ball out of our net, it is all 11 of them," Johnston said. "And it's not just the attackers responsible for putting the ball in their net, it's all of them. We attack as a team and defend as a team. Once we start pointing fingers, the team concept falls apart.
"Most importantly, we need to put this game aside, and focus on what's ahead of us, which is our ultimate goal, a district championship. If we revert back to the team we have been in the previous three games, we will find success again."
In junior varsity play, the Spartans outscored the Bulldogs 1-0.
Mexico soccer returns to the field Monday, facing the Kirksville Tigers in the first round of district play in Hannibal.
