The Lady Bulldogs play again Wednesday
After trailing 14-9 at the half, the fifth-seed Mexico girls rallied during the third quarter with 21 points and added another 18 in the fourth to beat the fourth-seed Clopton Hawks in the opening round of the Montgomery County Invitational Monday in Montgomery City.
"It was obviously a tale of two halves simply due to shooting percentage," head coach Ed Costley said.
During the first half, the Bulldogs shot just 16 percent from the field and 1-12 in three-point shooting. During the second half, they shot 52 percent from the field and were 6-8 beyond the arc.
"I was pleased with how our defense played throughout the entire game, it obviously kept us in the game during the first half," Costley said. "We continue to remind the girls not to worry about the score; if you're getting good looks and the shots you want they will fall soon."
Karen Baker led the Bulldogs in scoring with 14 points. Baker was 3-4 in three-point shooting and 3-4 from the free throw line, providing the Bulldogs with critical shots as the final minutes ticked off the clock. Danielle Baumgartner scored ten points and added 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs.
"We found early success on the inside game with Danielle and Kelli (Ingrum) until Clopton started doubling our post," Costley said. "I thought our guards played well down the stretch with Karen and Alison (Mudd) each hitting three-pointers in the second half."
Mudd added another nine points for the Bulldogs while stealing the ball three times. Kelli Ingrum had three points. Kaitlyn Ingrum recorded eight points, four assists and three rebounds while Remington Greenwell scored four points.
"The fourth quarter became a physical game," Costley said. "Kaitlyn took control of the game and managed us down the stretch.
The Bulldogs return to the tournament Wednesday to face the top-seeded Hermann Bearcats.
In other Mexico action, the Bulldog freshman boys beat the North Callaway Thunderbirds 56-36 in the opening round of the Mexico Freshman Tournament. They will play Fulton Wednesday in the tournament semi-finals. The Hornets defeated Hannibal 56-40.
