  • Mexico girls basketball took to the court in the second round of the Montgomery County Invitational Wednesday, losing to the top-seeded Hermann Bearcats, 52-24.
Against the much larger Bearcats, the fifth-seeded Bulldogs struggled to find open shots, going just 8-34 from the field and lost the battle on the boards, recording just 18 rebounds to the Bearcats 29.
"Going up against a good Hermann team, you can't afford to have a 23 percent shooting night and the majority of missed shots were in the lane," Mexico coach Ed Costley said. "They did a good job defensively running us off the three-point line."
The Bulldogs trailed 11-5 after one quarter, but were still in the game. A four-point second quarter sent the Bulldogs trailing 21-9 at the half. The Bearcats outscored the Bulldogs 20-9 in the third quarter to secure the victory before an 11-6 fourth quarter.
"Not keeping a good balanced floor on offense led to some easy run outs by Hermann," Costley said.
Kelli Ingrum went 4-5 from the field to lead the Bulldogs in scoring with eight points while also recording five rebounds. Danielle Baumgartner had four points and six rebounds and Karen Baker had four points and two rebounds. Ali Mudd contributed six points and Remington Greenwell had two to round out scoring for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs fall to 1-2 with the loss and will play for third in the tournament Friday.
"We have to move on and be ready to bounce back against Bowling Green," Costley said.
