Mexico eighth grade boys basketball remained undefeated Friday, beating the Fulton Hornets 43-28 to win the championship at the Chester Boren Invitational in Centralia.
"It was a really hard fought game by both teams," Mexico coach Ryan Richardson said. "We had to dig down deep and play our best ball to come away with the win."
Deion Wayman led the Bulldogs in scoring with 11 points while recording three rebounds and three steals. Tyler Spargo was the only other Bulldog to score in double digits, contributing ten points and three rebounds.
Michael White added seven points and two steals, Cameron Holman had four points and three assists and Quinton Baumgartner had four points and rebounds. Jamarquay McGruder was the leading rebounder, recording six boards in addition to six points.
"This team is a really special group of guys; they battle for each other instead of playing the game as individuals," Richardson said. "We hope to continue this momentum we have built throughout the season as we know we still have some tough competition to play."
The seventh grade boys A-team fell to the Hannibal Pirates 56-13 Tuesday on the road. The Pirates held the Bulldogs to just two points in the first half while scoring 35.
"Hannibal came out in a suffocating press that we struggled with all night," Mexico coach Brandon Schafer said. "Once we were able to figure out their press in the second half, we got some easy buckets out of our offense. I've seen a lot of improvement throughout each game, especially in our man defense."
Cole Whalen was the Bulldogs' leading scorer with five points. Jerry Cline scored four, Taylor Bledsoe had three and Jake Sims had one point for the Bulldogs.
In the B-game, Gage Worley scored 12 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 23-7 victory over the Pirates.
"We were able to move the ball and make our open shots," Schafer said. "The boys stepped up on the defensive side of the ball and didn't give up any easy baskets."
Tucker Dobyns scored six points, Zach Quinlan and Tony Hall had two each and Mason Templeton had one point for the Bulldogs.
