Seventh and eighth grade see action
The Mexico Middle School Lady Bulldogs took on Hannibal Monday Dec. 9.
The seventh grade "A" squad won 36-22. Aaryn Sampo was high scorer with 21 points and Mattie Roth attacked the boards with 10 rebounds. Grace Wortmann and Hannah Rodgers both contributed a lot on defense by being aggressive.
"We had a lot of success with our fast break option during this game. I'd still like to see more movement on offense, with more options to find the open player," said Coach Stephanie Robinett. "The girls are improving really well from our games so far."
The seventh grade "B" squad won 24-5. Hanna Goff was high scorer with 8 points. Ashley Owen and Vanessa Rivera did a great job handling the ball in their first point-guard appearance.
"With this being our first B game, the girls played extremely well together," said Robinett. "They ran through plays and always looked for the open player, along with holding Hannibal to very few shots on defense."
The next next game is in Fulton on Dec. 12 at 6 p.m.
The eight grade "A" lost by the score of 27-37. Elisabeth Gooch had 16 points, six rebounds, and two steals. MacKenzie Davis had seven points, three rebounds, and a steal. Kylie Morgan had four points and two rebounds.
"I was really proud of how the girls fought back and played together in the latter part of the third quarter and in the fourth quarter," said Coach Cindy Allison. "We were down by 21 at one point and it would have been easy to give up but they got it back to within 10 by the end of the game and were starting to put a lot of good things together. Hopefully we can build on that in our upcoming games."
The eighth grade "B" squad played only two quarters and came up short by the score of 10-4. Kellee Smith had two points and three steals. Maria Santiago added two points.
The next game is set for Thursday, Dec. 12 at Hannibal.
