  • MMS wrestlers claim 5 first-place medals

  • Mexico Middle School wrestling hosted the nine-team Mexico Invitational at Gary Filbert Court Thursday, with 14 Bulldogs earning medals, including five first-place medals.
    "Our home tournament was a good experience for all of our wrestlers," Mexico coach Tony Senor said. "We have a lot of first year wrestlers and this was their first tournament. I am glad we had a good turnout with the teams that came; we saw a lot of good competition and had a few close matches."
    Dylan Patton, Kellen Ekern, Hale Fummeler, Wyatt Turner and Steven Johnson all earned first-place medals by going undefeated in the tournament. Turner and Johnson both finished 4-0 with four pins.
    Fuemmeler was 4-0 with a tech-fall, two pins and a decision. Patton finished 3-0 with two pins and one decision.
    Ekern had one tech-fall and two decision to finish 3-0.
    Earning second-place medals were Dillon Nichols, Jaeden Pottebaum, Steven Owings and Matthew Whitesides.
    Nichols and Whitesides were both 3-1 with two pins and one decision. Owings finished 3-1 with one pin and two wins by decision while Pottebaum finished 2-1 with two pins.
    Vinny Vitale, Dakota Hicks, Andrew Lummis, Devin Logerman and Blayne Wieberg earned third place medals.
    Andrew Lummis finished 2-2 with two pins. Vitale, Hicks and Logerman each finished 1-2 with one pin. Wieberg was 1-2 with a tech-fall.
    "I am really proud of my eighth grade wrestlers, especially because they have stepped up to be leaders and have set a good example for their younger teammates," Senor said. "They are getting closer to being ready for the high school level."
    Mexico Middle School Wrestlers return to the mat Saturday at the Warsaw Tournament.
