  • The MHS Bulldogs varsity basketball team drew the California Pintos in the semi-final round of the California Basketball Tournament Thursday night.
The game was close early on but the Bulldogs saw the lead slip away in the third quarter and the game ended in a 51-57 loss for MHS.
The Bulldogs held an early 18-14 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 27-26 lead going into halftime. The third quarter saw MHS stumble slightly as their shots were not falling and so they fell behind 41-37 at the end of the quarter. An offensive flurry in the fourth quarter helped the Bulldogs but they could not corral the Pintos.
Cole Jaramillo, who had 26 points on the night, led the Bulldogs' offensive efforts. James Norton added seven points. D'Milo Nunnelly contributed six points. Skylar Harrington scored five points. Wesley Oetting had four points. Malik Holman chipped in three points.
Harrington registered seven assists on the night to lead the Bulldogs in that category. Jaramillo added two assists. Nunnelly, Norton, Oetting and Holman had one assist each.
Harrington, who recorded six rebounds on the night, was barely edged out for team leader in the category by Nunnelly, who had seven rebounds on the night.
Norton grabbed four rebounds. Holman picked up three rebounds. Jaramillo had two rebounds. Oetting chipped in one rebound to the effort.
Nunnelly collected three steals for the Bulldogs. Jaramillo picked up two steals. Harrington, Oetting and Holman also tallied a single steal each.
Not content with his already busy defensive night, Nunnelly added two blocked shots to his game statistics.
Coach Brennan Scanlon addressed the slight slump in scoring in the third quarter. "We have to be more consistent as a team and individually," he said. "We have to be ready to step up every game."
The MHS Bulldogs (5-5) return to action Saturday to face off against the Marshall Owls in the third place game of the California Tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
