Local golfers open 2014 Gateway PGA Junior season
Warmer weather in Missouri means it’s time to play golf. Mexico’s Lilly Knipfel, age 11, and her younger brother Aidan Knipfel, age 8, think so too. The two junior golfers, who have played since age four, just started their second year of competition in the Gateway PGA Junior program in Saint Louis.
Last weekend, both Knipfels were able to bring home second place medals in their respective age divisions at the Gateway PGA season opener. Both have goals to best their last season’s records.
For Lilly, the 2013 season was a highly successful one. She took first place in her age division championships (9-10) and earned Player of the Year honors as well. She also earned first place in regular events four times, second place twice and third place once. She also finished second at the Mexico Country Club tournament (for the third time) and tied for third at the Walsworth Marceline tournament.
In 2013, Aidan earned runner up in the Gateway PGA championship, was named player of the year for 7-8 boys and had a third place tie during the 2013 Gateway PGA junior program. He did however bring home first place in the Mexico Country Club junior tournament (for the third time), first place in the Walsworth Marceline Tournament (for the second time) and first place in the La Rue Insurance open of Monroe City.
