  • UNIONVILLE - The Midgets are trending upwards.
After years of struggling through one win seasons and watching other programs take off ahead of them the Midgets are finally poised to take that next step and close the gap between them and their rivals.
But the coaching staff isn’t ready to crown themselves the conference champions just yet.
“We’re trying to take another step and I think we’re in the process,” Putnam County head coach Dave Cavanah said. “But we’re still not anywhere close to our expectations.”
After a strong showing at the Milan Jamboree last week, Cavanah is quick to temper excitement and bring his players back to reality before they start dreaming of conference and district championships.
“Every place I’ve been, you don’t win or lose a Jamboree,” Cavanah said. “We were running the same plays over and over with different kids.”
Putnam County expects to get even more of a dose of reality when they travel to South Callaway.
“We’ve got our hands full, but we got to come out of this game with a positive attitude,” Cavanah said. “You hope to win, but more importantly where we’re at in this program, we have to be taking positive steps forward.”
The offensive line and two seniors in particular are expected to play a big role in this game and the season.
“I have a running back in Chance Hendee and he showed me stuff the other night I haven’t seen the year before,” Cavanah said. “From tackle to tackle we only lost one senior and I think Riley Wood has some of the better set of hands on the team.”
South Callaway has a reputation of being a team that spreads you out and forces you into making mistakes for their offense to work.
When asked about the game plan to try and beat them, Cavanah’s philosophy was vastly different from South Callaway’s.
“We’re going to go out and try to punch people in the mouth, that’s my style, I’m old school,” Cavanah said. “We’re going to line up and see if we can run over you.”
