Community beats Cairo, Slater to improve to 4-1

Following its first loss of the season, the Community R-VI softball team got back in the win column this week with a 1-0 win over Cairo on Monday and a 13-2 rout of Slater on Tuesday.

The Trojans had suffered their first loss of the season to Silex on Friday.

In Monday’s game, Emma Angel recorded the win on the mound with six strikeouts. Emmi Johnson went 2 for 3 at the plate.

“We played a tough Cairo team, a conference rival,” Coach Carey Thomas said. “We know everytime we play Cairo we are in a dogfight for a win. It was a suspenseful game with plays at the plate and a double play by shortstop Sarah Angel and a nice stretch by first baseman Olivia Kuda to end the game. I am super proud of the girls as they fought and battled for the win. Emma was stellar on the mound and Emmi was fantastic at the plate.”

The following day, Emily Hoyt, Angel and Johnson had three hits apiece. Angel had the win on the mound.

“After a big win on Monday we had a two-hour drive to Slater and played a very business-like game,” Thomas said. “Each inning adding runs to the scoreboard, while holding them to just two runs. We ended the game with 13 hits, and had three girls contribute to the pitching (Emma Angel, Shelby Clark, Sarah Angel). It's tough to bounce back after a big win and play another game, but they took care of business to secure the win."
