Chili dinner Saturday at East Alton church

Troop 161 Mother's Club will be holding their 13th annual Chili, Soup, Potato Bar, and Chili Dogs from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at East Alton Community of Christ, 23rd Street and R.D. Mize Road, Independence.

The $6 cost includes the main dish, drink and dessert. You may also purchase a second bowl of chili for $1 and a quart of chili for $6.

 

Glenwood Park UMC plans free health clinic

Glenwood Park Methodist Church will hold a free health clinic from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 4, 10000 E. 23rd St., Independence. The church holds the clinics on the first Saturday of the month.

The screenings, sponsored by the Black Nurse Association and the Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center, include glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure and body mass index testing.

Mission center minister to speak Sunday

"Light of the World” is the theme for 10:20 a.m. Sunday worship service at the Stone Church Community of Christ, 1012 W. Lexington Ave., Independence.

The speaker will be Tyler Horringa, who serves as Youth Minister at the Central USA Mission Center. Darlene Caswell will preside, with Phillip Caswell and Barbara Graeff-Vinck also participating. Sandra Byrne will provide the vocal music, with Barbara Fears as organist/pianist.

Timothy Lutheran begins DivorceCare seminars

DivorceCare will begin a new 13-week program on Tuesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Timothy Lutheran Church, 425 R.D. Mize Road, Room 102, Blue Springs.

DivorceCare features 13 weekly dynamic DVD seminars featuring 32 renowned experts on divorce and recovery.

A program for children whose parents are separated or divorced will also be offered. Through DivorceCare for Kids, children between the ages of 5 and 12 find healing and encouragement and acquire coping skills for this challenging time.

Northern Boulevard offers grief support group

A Grief Support group will be starting back up at Northern Boulevard United Methodist Church beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday, and will meet weekly for six weeks. The material will be printed out for anyone interested in attending.

It will be led by David and Elaine Howlett of Christ United Methodist Church, and will cover a book they have written titled, “It’s Natural to Grieve and Imperative to Mourn: Finding Grace in Sorrow.”

Eastgate Christian to honor Lincoln

Eastgate Christian Church will hold a special worship service in honor of the 208th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth at 10:25 a.m. Feb. 12. The service will feature a Lincoln sermon and period hymns and music, and scripture readings from the King James Version of the Bible, which Lincoln read and often quoted.

Rev. Joshua Patty's sermon considers how our understanding of history and faith is shaped by the visual arts, and will consider some of the great biblical epics, in addition to several movies about Lincoln.

Rev. Patty has been studying the life and legacy of Lincoln for more than 25 years and is the author of the Lincoln-related blog Lincolniana, where he shares insights into exhibits, books, and artifacts related to the 16th president.

Good Shepherd women collecting shoes

The ladies group at Good Shepherd Christian Church in Blue Springs are working with Funds 2 Orgs through March 25 to collect gently worn shoes for men, women and children who are not experiencing some good times.

Their goal is to fill 300 bags, each holding 25 pairs in each bag. If they can meet this goal, CWF will have the knowledge that they were able to help some of God's children. Just by word of mouth, more than 25 pairs have already been collected.

Collection containers will be available at Vesper Hall, 400 N.W. Vesper St. in Blue Springs, and also at the church, located at 111 S.W. Woods Chapel Road in Blue Springs.
