Mexico Mayor Ron Loesch and Frank Cordie, president of Mid America Brick in Mexico, were joined by employees and military veterans Garrett Spoor and Tom Blackburn Feb. 14 in Columbia during a ceremony to recognize Mid-Missouri businesses that hire veterans. Additional Mexico businesses recently recognized are: United Credit Union, for hiring two veterans; Ameristaff hired two veterans; Missouri Staffing has hired one person and Mexico Plastics has hired one person.
The award is part of the Show-Me Heroes initiative, established by Gov. Jay Nixon in January 2010 to encourage companies to consider hiring veterans. Administered by the Division of Workforce Development in the Department of Economic Development, the Show-Me Heroes program also provides dedicated veterans representatives who help with job counseling for former service members and contact and encourage employers to hire veterans.
The award is a plaque of an American flag patch from the combat uniform of a member of the Missouri National Guard worn while that citizen-soldier or airman was deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan.
Employers who wish to participate in Show-Me Heroes can visit the state's website, MO.gov, to register and take the pledge. Once a company has done so, it is listed prominently in an online database that highlights veteran-friendly employers across Missouri. Employers receive a special certificate, signed by the governor, and a decal to display at their location.
