Kevin Freeman, present assistant superintendent, has been named superintendent of the Mexico Public Schools. Freeman will begin his duties July 1.
“I am thrilled to have this opportunity,” Freeman said. “We have great people in our district and great students in our schools. I look forward to leading Mexico No. 59.”
Freeman was selected after an interview process was completed by the Board of Education. He has several goals, for the district and the job.
“I have been here long enough to know our strengths and to know our weaknesses,” he said. “As the superintendent, I believe I can lead the board and the district to make changes and adjustments we need to improve our student performance and our community relationships.”
He says his first job will be to build trust, and improve the perception of the school with the community.
“Mexico [school district] is a crucial player in the hopeful resurgence of the community of Mexico,” he said. “We have to be a strong and successful school system in order for potential companies to relocate to Mexico and Audrain County.”
Freeman first came to the district in 2003, when he served one year as principal at Mexico High School. He then accepted the position of superintendent of schools at Van-Far R-I before returning to Mexico as assistant superintendent in 2007.
Freeman has completed all classwork to earn a doctorate from St. Louis University, holds a Specialist Degree from St. Louis University, a Master of Arts degree from Southeast Missouri State University, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Central Methodist College.
While at CMC, he was a varsity assistant defensive line coach and linebacker coach. He taught biology and general science and coached football, wrestling and track at Lebanon Junior and Senior High Schools from 1986-1987; taught anatomy and physiology, biology, life and earth science, and coached football and track at Willard Junior and Senior High Schools 1992-1995; and taught at Portageville High School 1995-2001, serving as lead teacher, head football and head track coach.
Freeman's first administrative position was that of principal at Bourbon High School, from 2001-2003.
His professional memberships include the National Staff Development Council, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals, Show-Me Curriculum Coordinators Association, Missouri State Teachers Association, Missouri Association of School Administrators, American Association of School Adminstrators, Leadership Academy Facility, Outdoor Leadership Academy Facilitator, Data Team Leader Certification and Carolyn Downey Principal Walk-Through Evaluation Method Certification.
Freeman is the father of three sons: Thomas, a junior at MHS; Spencer, a freshman; and Caden, sixth-grader at Mexico Middle School.
