MHS TENNIS: A third-place finish by Mexico High School’s No. 3 doubles team highlighted the Lady Bulldogs’ efforts at Saturday’s NCMC tournament in Kirksville.
Christina Smith and Karli Tumbleson dropped their opening match, but rebounded to post 3 straight wins.
“They did a great job and won three close matches in a row,” MHS coach Jim Graham said. “A couple were teams that had beaten them in the last two weeks.”
In singles for Mexico, Sydney Stamy placed fifth, Brooke Doolittle seventh, Abby Orscheln seventh, Allison Swopes sixth, Nadine Bogdon sixth and Monica Rothermich fifth. The other doubles results for the Lady Bulldogs saw Liesel Walser-Veda Crouch take seventh as did Carrie Finck-Ravin Palmer.
Kirksville won the team title with 61 points. Then came Marshall 50, Moberly 36, Hannibal 33, Boonville 30, Fulton 22 and Mexico 18.
Mexico singles results
Stamy lost to Hutcherson (Mar) 10-1, Stamy def. Collins (Han) 8-0, Stamy lost to Wamsley (Mob) 8-0, Stamy lost to Adair (BV) 8-3. Stamy took fifth place.
Doolittle lost to Oberkrom (Mob) 10-4, Doolittle lost to Shipman (BV) 8-5. Doolittle took seventh place.
Orscheln lost to Updyke (KV) 10-5, Orscheln lost to Fisher (Ful) 9-8 (7-4). Orscheln took seventh place.
Swopes lost to Decikerson (Mob) 10-2, Swopes def. Osburn (Ful) 8-3, Swopes lost to K. Van (Mar) 8-0, Swopes lost to Leathers (BV) 8-5. Swopes took sixth place.
Bogdon lost to Haman (KV) 10-2, Bogdon def . Holt (Ful) 8-4, Bogdon lost to Hammock (Han) 8-5, Bogdon lost to Coleman (Mob) 8-4. Bogdon took sixth place.
Rothermich lost to Walsh (Han) 10-2, Rothermich received a bye, Rothermich lost to Davis (BV) 8-1, Rothermich received an injury default from Otting (Ful). Rothermich took fifth place.
MEXICO DOUBLES RESULTS
Walser-Crouch lost to Kreps-Maggert (KV) 10-1, Walser-Crouch lost to Kenney-Wineland (BV) 8-5. Walser-Crouch took seventh place.
Finck-Palmer lost to Audet-Cochran (Mar) 10-3, Finck-Palmer lost to Mulnix-Smith (Mob) 8-6. Finck-Palmer took seventh place.
Smith-Tumbleson lost to Summers-Rector (Mar) 10-3, Smith-Tumbleson def. Libbert-Lee (Ful) 8-3, Smith-Tumbleson def. Cook-Alexander (BV) 9-7, Smith-Tumbleson def. Philbert-Brace (Han) 8-6. Smith-Tumbleson took third place.
CENTRALIA FOOTBALL: At home Friday against CCC rival Mark Twain, the state-ranked Panthers rolled to a 67-27 triumph behind a school record 6 touchdowns by Will Evans.
Evans, who rushed for 206 yards on 17 carries, scored on runs of 26, 14, 1, 47, 4 and 40 for Centralia, 6-0 both conference and overall.
The Panthers led 46-14 by the half.
NORCAL FOOTBALL: Host Tipton secured at least a share of the Mid-Mo title with Friday’s 24-14 victory over the Thunderbirds.
A 14-yard interception return by the Cardinals in the second period snapped a 7-7 tie. Kyle Ward had a 1-yard TD run in the first quarter and Travis Karhoff pulled in a 24-yard TD pass from David Heileman in the final period with Andrew Attebery kicking both extra points for the 4-2/2-1 T-Birds.
Sam Magruder was involved in 10 tackles and Zach Beamer 9 for NorCal, which played well on defense but had little in the way of a rushing game and was guilty of 4 turnovers.
NORCAL SOFTBALL: The Ladybirds beat Clopton 6-2 for third place in Saturday’s Bowling Green Invitational after defeating Mexico 8-2 and losing to the host team 2-0.
Kayla Haley was the winning pitcher twice for North Callaway, now 14-6. Becca Spencer started Game 3 after taking the loss in Game 2, giving up a pair of unearned runs. Meagan Thurman homered against Mexico and Clopton; Spencer also hit a home run against Mexico.
CR6 SOFTBALL: In Saturday’s Cairo Invitational, a 3-team round robin using the international tiebreaker, the Lady Trojans won 4-3 over the host team, then lost 5-2 to Salisbury in 8 innings.
A run in the fifth made the difference for Community R-6 in Game 1, which saw Ashley Curtis strike out 8, walk 2 and allow 4 hits. Curtis also hit 2 triples, while Brooke Evans and Courtney Arens both went 3-for-4 for the Lady Trojans, Evans with a double and triple and Arens with 2 triples.
Salisbury came up with a run in the seventh to tie and 3 in the eighth to win despite 9 strikeouts by A. Curtis. Evans had a double/triple/2 RBI and Shelby Curis a double for CR6.
PARIS SOFTBALL: Thursday against Sturgeon, the Lady Coyotes scored a 12-2 victory behind Kayla Redmon, who struck out 12 over 6 innings.
