Yes, Virginia, there IS a high school basketball season, wrestling too. They’re just starting in December this year instead of November.
Mexico varsity boys and girls open their 2008-09 campaigns the week after a later-than-usual Thanksgiving in the Montgomery County Invitational. The Ledger’s annual basketball preview edition also awaits the start of the holiday season, coming out Monday, Dec. 1.
But for those who can’t wait to check out all three Mexico High School winter sports, circle next Tuesday on your calendars. That’s the date chosen for preseason scrimmages in boys basketball, girls basketball and wrestling.
Starting time is 6 p.m. with the basketball teams taking the court in the sports complex gym, while the matmen go public in Gooch Gym. Bulldog wrestlers open their season Saturday, Dec. 6 in the Grain Valley Classic.
Admission to the open house is a canned food item, which will go to the Help Center.
Mexico boys have been seeded fourth and Mexico girls fifth in their season-opening meet. Back for their senior seasons are Michael Howard, Logan Schlemmer, Austin Melvin, Dezzy Reynolds and Willie Maxwell, plus Callie Bracht, Makenzie Mudd and Katherine Wortmann.
The Lady Bulldogs tip off at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1 against No. 4 seed Hermann and will play again that Wednesday and Friday. Bowling Green is the top seed, followed by Fulton second and Clopton third.
