A group of representatives from local businesses attended a luncheon meeting Tuesday at the Mexico Area Chamber of Commerce office to kick off the 3/50 project in Mexico. The 3/50 project promotes shopping at local independently owned stores. Participants are asked to think about which three independently owned stores they would miss most if the business closed and then commit to spending $50 in each of those three establishments during a three-month time span continually throughout the year. The representatives are urged to introduce and promote the concept to community residents, encouraging all consumers to redirect $50 each month of their spending dollars to local independently owned businesses. The project founder Cinda Baxter claims for every $100 spent in independently owned stores, $68 of it returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures.
