With 11 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter on Monday at home against South Callaway, Tanner Piezold tied the game for the North Callaway varsity boys' basketball team at 54-54 to send the game to an extra session.
Even though they never led during regulation, the Thunderbirds never trailed in overtime, instead turning a field goal by Xavier Sykes and four free throws into a 60-58 victory.
In the first quarter South Callaway outscored North Callaway 10-5 and took a 27-24 lead into halftime. The Thunderbird's were also outscored 15-13 in the third to fall behind 42-37 before claiming a 17-12 offensive advantage in the fourth.
Connecting on a trio of triple for North Callaway to score 16 was Dawson Wright, Tully Thomsen had nine points and Piezold poisted a team-high five rebounds. Coy Dannison also led the squad with three assists,
For South Callaway, 1-7 overall, Code Helsel put up a game-high 23 points.
North Callaway, 2-6 overall, is at Montgomery County for an Eastern Missouri Conference contest on Friday and is at the South Callaway Tournament Jan. 9-14.
