When the Community R-6 varsity boys' basketball team was leading at the end of the first and second quarters on Wednesday at the Madison Tournament against Cairo, head coach Matt Thomas was feeling good about his team.
After the Trojans then found themselves ahead once again after a strong third quarter, their chances for success seemed favorable, a goal that never came to fruition because CR-6 instead lost 53-42.
"We led the first three quarters and only scored six in the 4th quarter," said Thomas. "Turnovers, bad shot selection and we ran out of gas in the fourth. We had a lot of shots go in and out and just not fall."
Headlining this hard-fought effort for the Trojans was Cordell Hollesnsteiner with 21 points, three rebounds and two assists, Eric Hombs had nine points, three boards and one assist and Cadin Escamilla came through with seven points, three assists and two rebounds. Danny Kuda also posted three points and a rebound, Adam Hombs grabbed three boards and Matt Gastler added two points, six rebounds and one assist.
Community R-6, 3-6 overall, is at Wright City on Jan. 10.
