Things were far from perfect for the Missouri Military Academy varsity wrestling team on Thursday at a road tri-meet. The Colonel's aren't much for excuses, though, and instead found a way to claim victories over host Palmyra 48-30 and Macon 42-24.
"We were short handed today but next man up held there own," said coach Jeff Miller. "We were lead today by Samuel Carr, Matthew Thibodeaux, Phoenix Jumper and Richard Choy. Our team is peaking. Once we get a couple of our injured wrestlers back we will be ready for districts."
In the win against Palmyra, even though Heather Risley at 113, Wade Fessenden at 120, Michael Bishop at 145 and Matthew Calnan at 152 all won by forfiet, the same could be said for the Colonel's Conner Sims at 220, Alican Yumuk at 195, Jumper at 182 and R Choy at 106. Because both teams voided at 138, that broke this dual down to just five matches.
That set the stage for a short fireworks display by MMA that featured wins by fall from Heavyweight Sky Thunderchild-Henio over Braden Erwin in 1:45, Matthew Thibodeaux at 170 came out on top at 170 in :45 against Evan Kelso and Sam Carr pinned Palmyra's Tyler Murray in 1:06. The Colonel's Stiles Fountain also pinned Gradey Crowe at 132 in 2:30 and at 126 Tyler Henigman lost in 1:55 to Boyd Triplett.
MMA also defeated Tipton 29-24 on Jan. 24 and lost at North Callaway 45-24.
"Phoenix Jumpers' fall over Daniel Sutton against Tipton was a decisive match that decided victory," Miller said. "(Another highlight) for MMA was TylerHenigman's men's fall over Victor Daniels from North Callaway. Missouri Military Academy is improving each dual and tournament. The guys have been working hard even though a few of our starters are injured. The next man is stepping up."
MMA next wrestles at districts Feb. 10-11.
