Once Raigan Playter scored the opening basket for the Mexico varsity girls basketball team at home on Friday, Jamie Lemmons scored twice, Hannah Fuemmeler had a field goal and Brynn Edwards connected on three baskets in-a-row to help Boonville win 65-49.
"I'm frustrated with our ability to go out and make decisions on the fly. Everything has to be scripted and that's killing us right now," said coach Ed Costley. "It can't all be scripted. Some of what we do has to be instincts, and we don't have that right now."
Things began to slip away even further for the Lady Bulldogs when they found themselves trailing 15-8 at 1:26 and 17-10 at 1:02 of the first quarter. That deficit could have been even worse had it not been for field goal by Kayla Scobee and four points from Shelbi Shaw, all of which allowed the Lady Pirates to go up 19-10.
"From time to time, we just don't seem to show that mental toughness. That mental edge and understanding of how to be combative as players," Ed Costley said. "We let little things bother us. Little bumps. Hands on us. Deflections. Drops. The next thing you know it's a turnover. e're just not finding ways to be tough and get to the open spots."
In the second Mexico found itself on the wrong side of a 38-17 deficit that it tried to put a dent in to start the third when Adria Costley and Shaw came together to score five. Now trailing 41-22 at 6:32, the Lady Bulldogs missed several free throws, which kept them down 44-26 at 5:06 and 48-30 at 2:09 before ending the third behind 54-33.
"We were sitting back on our heels from the beginning. We're trying to make passes instead of atking it to them and attacking," said Ed Costley. "It wasn't anything Boonville was doing. It was everything we were doing. Somehow as coaches we need to find a way to get the aggressiveness to make the push to effort and go attack. We were just standing there and waiting for something to happen."
The fourth was a whole lot more of the same as Mexico trailed 62-35 at 5:23 and 65-44 at 2:46. The Lady Bulldog's even cut Boonville's lead to 17 points at 1:45 prior toAdria Costley scoring one last time with :51.0 left in regulation, none of which left the Lady Bulldog's coaching staff with a smile.
"I'm not sure how many turnovers we had, but I'm sure it will be somewhere around 25 or 30 when we do the stats," Ed Costley said.
Even though the night was far from perfect for Mexico, Shaw did have 12 points, Adria Costley scored 13 and Reagan Smith added eight points. Raighan Playter also contributed five points, Aaryn Sampo hit a three-pointer and charting two points each were Anna Proctor, Morgan Bledsoe and Scobee.
The Lady Bulldogs, 6-10 overall, 2-5 North Central Missouri Conference, welcomes Marshall for a league game on Friday.
