The Winfield varsity boys' basketball team may have the experience that comes with having played 22 games already this season, but Thursday in the second round of the Bowling Green Tournament that was far from obvious as the team lost to North Callaway 67-32.

Fueling this drive for the Thunderbird's with a team-high 23 points was Gabe Cash, Tanner Pezold came through with 13 points and Tully Thomsen pulled down five rebounds and 10 points on a pair of three-pointers, the second of which came from half court to end the second quarter. Coy Dannison also put up eight points, 12 assists and four steals.

"We got a lot of deflections that turned into steals and scores," said coach Mathias Miller.

Despite Jon Pruitt's nine points, Winfield, 4-18 overall, never had a chance after getting outscored 17-2 in the first and 21-9 in the second to go to halftime trailing 38-11. North Callaway then claimed the second half 29-21 while making 28-of-42 field goals for the game. This includes going 16-for-24 in the first half and 6-for-12 on three-pointers.

The Thunderbirds, 7-10 overall, played Elsberry on Saturday for third place in this tournament.
