Local students win

NCWIT awards

for computer tech

As part of an effort to encourage more young women to choose careers in technology, the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) and Kansas City Power & Light recognized 15 high school women – Including one each from Blue Springs High School and William Chrisman High School – for their accomplishments and aspirations in computing and technology at an award ceremony and reception at Kansas City Power & Light on Friday.

The young women are winners of the NCWIT Western Missouri and Kansas Affiliate Award for Aspirations in Computing, which recognizes high-school women for their computing-related achievements and interests. Each winner received a glass trophy, a prize donated by Commerce Bank,an NCWIT messenger bag and swag items provided by NCWIT and local sponsors.

Vale Gibson of William Chrisman and Amber Stewart of Blue Springs were among the 15 winners of this award.

Honorable mentions for the award will receive a gift certificate (courtesy of.NetApp of Wichita and Northwest Missouri State University), a glass trophy, an NCWIT string bag and swag items.

Samantha Baker and Madeleine Brittingham, both of Blue Springs High School, won honorable mention honors.

“With technology jobs projected to grow faster than all other job sectors in the next decade, it’s imperative that we nurture the computing aspirations of women, who will make up half the professional workforce,” said Lucy Sanders, CEO and Co-founder of NCWIT. “This award allows us to recognize and encourage talent that might otherwise be overlooked.”

The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing was created to encourage the computing aspirations of young women, introduce them to leadership opportunities in the field, and generate visibility for women’s participation in technology fields. Winners are acknowledged for their outstanding aptitude and interest in technology and computing, leadership ability, academic history, and plans for post-secondary education.

  

Blue Springs student

awarded scholarship

from Central Missouri

Dedication to academic success in high school has earned Kallie Deyerie, daughter of Robert and Heather Deyerie, Blue Springs, a Red and Black Scholarship in the amount of $2,500 per year to attend the University of Central Missouri.

The Red and Black Scholarship is awarded to incoming UCM freshmen based upon their high school cumulative grade point average and ACT composite score. The scholarship is renewable and may be received for a maximum of eight semesters of undergraduate study.

A senior at Blue Springs High School, Deyerie is planning to attend UCM in the fall.

earns academic

honor at Troy U.

Brett Buchanan of Blue Springs has been named to the Provost's List for the 2016 fall semester at Troy University in Troy, Alabama.

The Provost's List honors full-time undergraduate students who are registered for at least 12 semester hours and who have a grade point average of at least 3.65.

College dean’s list

Zachary R. Felz of Independence has been named to the dean’s list for the fall 2016 semester at Columbia College in Columbia, Mo.

To be named to the dean's list, a student must have completed 12 semester hours in a 16-week period and achieved a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0-point scale.

Stephens College

A pair of local students have been named to the dean’s lists for the fall 2016 semester at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo.

Rachael Mallinson of Sugar Creek was named to the high honors dean list, which goes to student who have finished at least 12 credit hours and achieved a grade point average of 3.8 to 4.0 for the semester. Mallinson, the daughter of Kathy Mallinson, is a sophomore digital filmmaking major and a graduate of William Chrisman High School.

Amber Steinwachs of Blue Springs was named to the honors dean’s list, which goes to which goes to student who have finished at least 12 credit hours and achieved a grade point average of 3.6 to 3.79 for the semester. Steinwachs, the daughter of Tamatha Steinwachs, is a sophomore education major and a Blue Springs High School graduate.
