Mexico residents will have the opportunity again this year to watch two Fourth of July fireworks displays.
The first one is sponsored by Tyronn Lue and will be held at dusk (approximately 9 p.m.) July 1.
This year the display will be fired from the old A.P. Green Refractory property. According to Mexico Public Safety, parking will not be allowed on the property. The section of Boulevard along the property will be closed during the display. Citizens can watch the fireworks using lawn chairs or blankets from Garfield Park or from the field in front of the A.P. Green property, north of the Shamrock sign. Parking will be made available on one side of the roads of: Tyronn Lue Boulevard, Trinity, Garfield, and Central starting around 6 p.m.
Additional parking is available in any of the surrounding residential areas as normal. People should not block private driveways and to respect private property. No parking will be allowed on Boulevard.
There will be events at Garfield Park throughout the day.
The second display is sponsored by the Mexico Noon Lions and will be on July 4at dark (around 9 p.m.).
The fireworks were purchased through a fundraiser which was supported by individuals, groups and organizations throughout the community.
The display will be fired from the area between the Optimist Ball Fields and the Missouri Veterans' Home. According to MPSD, parking will not be allowed along Route J (Agricultural). Parking is available at the Optimist Ball Fields and in any of the surrounding residential areas as normal. Again people should not block private driveways and to respect private property.
Citizens are reminded that because there are many private lots, buildings, vehicles, pets, and people in town, it is illegal to discharge fireworks in the city limits. This applies both to fireworks that travel and fireworks that do not. MPSD wants to remind people if a firework has to be lit to activate it, there is the potential to burn someone or start a fire.
Also, on July 4th at the Optimist Park there will be a mesh ball tournament. Beginning time is determined by the number of teams. Anyone interested should contact the Mexico Sports Authority for more information.
The Mexico Elks Lodge is sponsoring a barbecue beginning at 11 a.m. until ?? at the same location. The menu will be pork steaks, brats, hamburgers and hotdogs. Chips and a variety of drinks will also be available to purchase.
