With a total of six athletes at her disposal, Community R-6 varsity boys and girls track and field coach Stacy Carroz would probably tell you the fact her team qualified to compete in two events at the class 1 sectionals was a definite highlight.
This included Alissa Craig placing fifth in the shot put with a throw of 31-0 and the 4x200 relay team of Haley Kinder, Elisa Swaim, Paige Risenhoover and Deann Brooks finishing seventh with a time of 1:59.93 on May 13th at Lutheran North High School.
The one specific issue that worked against CR-6 throughout all of 2017 was that Eric Hombs was the only member of the boys squad. That didn't stop him from competing in four events at the class 1 districts, though, taking seventh in the 100 dash in 12.13 and eighth in the javelin at 103-5. Hombs also came in 10th in the discus with a distance of 96-8 and in the 200 dash he finished 14th with a time of 25.94 at New Haven on May 6.
For the girls at districts Deann Brooks managed to take fifth in the triple jump at 29-11, Hayley Kinder was 15th in the long jump at 10-3 and Craig took sixth in the discus with a throw of 80-8. Brooks and Kinder also swiped the 13th and 16th spots in the 200 dash by clocking in at 31.11 and 32.07, respectively, and in the 800 run Swaim was 10th in 3:04.25 and Risenhoover came in 15th at 3:11.48.
Prior to all of this at the Eastern Missouri Conference meet at North Callaway on May 2 the competition was even tighter as Hombs was 10th in the javelin and 100 dash for the Trojans and 13th in the discus and 200 dash. Alissa Craig also found the going tough at this event and placed eighth in the shot put and ninth in the discus, Swaim and Risenhoover competed in the 100 dash and 800 run and Brooks was seventh in the 200 dash and third in the triple jump.
