The 2017 varsity tennis season provided Mexico with all the challenges you'd expect for a team that belongs to the North Central Missouri Conference.
But, once that regular-season gauntlet-run through competition like Kirksville, Hannibal, Fulton and Marshall was complete, the Bulldogs emerged with their best performance of 2017. Specifically, Mexico, 2-11 overall, had the good fortune of drawing a home meet to begin class 1, district 7, on May 8 at the courts near the YMCA, leading to its 5-4 upset win over NCMC rival Moberly, 5-13 overall.
All good things must come to an end, though, and for Mexico that time came the next day on May 9 when they were eliminated from the Missouri State High School Athletic Association 5-0 by eventual district champion Boonville, 9-1 overall.
Even though that playoff win was a definite highlight for Mexico, it wasn't a complete surprise because during the regular season in its first home match of 2017 in April the squad downed those same Spartans 8-4. Because the Bulldogs went on to lose at home several days later to School of the Osage 6-3, which was highlighted by Hayden Foreman winning 8-1 at No. 3 Singles, they weren't able to enjoy that win for very long.
