As they've been doing for most of this summer on Tuesday's and Wednesday's, Centralia hosted its summer softball scrimmage league this week.
On July 11 that event began at 9:00 a.m. with Centralia II vs Battle and North Callaway vs Salisbury. At 10:15 a.m. the next set of contests featured Mexico facing Palmyra, the Ladybirds played Macon and Centralia II went up against Westran. Then, at 11:30 a.m., Centralia played its first game against Mashfield, Hamilton took on Salisbury and Putnam County scrimmaged Westran.
In regards to our local teams, Mexico also played Marshfield and Hamilton at 2:00 p.m. and 3:15 p.m., Centralia was on the field against Salisbury and North Callaway at 12:45 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. and Centralia II faced Salisbury and Marceline at 3:15 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively. The Ladybirds competed against Palmyra t 2:00 p.m., as well.
While the weather was in the low 90's, but felt even hotter, Mexico had the good fortune of having head coach Keith Louder in the dugout with them even though he also teaches summer school. The timing for that return was especially well thought out considering Mexico varsity assistant softball coach Kayla Meier is away from the team on a religious mission in Romania she left for Monday morning. Results on the day for the Lady Bulldogs included falling 5-0 to Palmyra.
Centralia, on the other hand, not only has to handle all the responsibilities of a host, but also has to deal with all the duties and manage all the personalities that come with fielding two complete squads for this event. Fortunately for long time head coach Jill Angell, new girls varsity basketball coach Rebecca Schemmer is also a softball assistant coach whose been incredibly present with both of those progams this offseason.
