Bulldogs varsity wrestling coach Gayle Adams traveled with Brit Wilson, Kellen Ekern, Dillion Nichols and Kevin Duong as they competed last weekend in Fargo, N.D., at the 2017 Cadet/Junior Freestyle National Championships. For the event Duong and Nichols both went 0-2, Ekern was 3-2 and Wilson defeated Kansas All-American Dan Butler 8-3 and won his second match by technical fall 12-2 prior to bowing out early because of an injury.
MS-Is this the final time Brit Wilson will compete as a Bulldog? What did his leadership mean to the other three wrestlers at this event?
GA-Yes this is the last time Brit will compete as a Mexico Bulldog. Brit is a great leader for the sport and for Mexico youth. Brit works hard at everything he does he makes everyone better. I'm excited to see what he does at the next level he will always give back to the program because that is who he is. It's unfortunate that he got a little banged up and couldn't finish because Brit didn't want his last high school tournament to end like that.
MS- How did you feel Nichols performed at this event? Duong?
GA- Dillion and Kevin are improving every day at practice and at tournaments we can't measure wins and losses at this tournament for them they are learning how to compete and work thru competition it's a fight. Everything they did this summer will pay off big this winter in season. I couldn't ask anything else from them they are great for Mexico Wrestling great leaders on and off the mat they are always giving back.
MS- How would you describe Kellen's intensity (last) weekend? How dedicated has he been to improving?
GA- Kellen is a kid with great heart he wants to achieve at every level. He is preparing for his final season as a Bulldog before he goes to college to wrestle. Kellen wrestled a lot this summer and it shows and that will always pay off this winter. At national tournaments you must have high intensity and ready to knock kids off. I'm proud of Kellen and what he means to our program and community.
MS- Please feel free to add any thoughts, quotes or statements you find pertinent, as well.
GA- It's been a crazy few days. My guys did great this summer. They made a point to get better and they accomplished that. This winter will be fun for the team and the community. I'm ready for the season to start.
