Parents will have the opportunity to save money this weekend during the 2017 Sales Tax Holiday. It begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday and continues through Sunday.

Purchases, such as clothing, school supplies, computers and other items are exempt from sales tax for this time period.

The sales tax holiday applies to state and local taxes when a local jurisdiction chooses to participate in the holiday. However, several cities and counties have opt out of the program.

According to city of Mexico officials, the city does participate for school supplies, but not appliances. However, Audrain County does not participate, according to Presiding Commission Steve Hobbs. Callaway and Boone also do not participate.

Area cities not participating include Montgomery City and Vandalia.
