Alexis McPike, daughter of Doug and Lori McPike of Mexico has been assigned to the newly commissioned naval destroyer USS Rafael Peralta.
The destroyer, named in memory of Rafael Peralta, who was killed in action in 2004 in Fallujah, Iraq, was commissioned recently in San Diego, Calif.
Ensign McPike, a graduate of Mexico High School, was interviewed twice by CBS affiliate CBS News 8 in San Diego, Calif. at the ceremony.
"It feels very exciting to be here today, she said in the interview. "I've been with the ship all through sail around."
She went on to say "...That leadership and experience that Sgt. Peralta in his own military experience, it's an honor to be able to serve in the same capacity ..."
McPike's parents attended the ceremony.
This is the second time in less than a year that a Mexico High graduate, in the military, is interviewed on a news story. Air Force Captain Stuart Miller, was interviewed last September in Omaha at the Offutt Air Force Base on a "60 Minutes" story about "The New Cold War."
