Coming into Friday's varsity football game at North Callaway, Southern Boone was tied with Orchard Farm for 10th in the class 3 preseason rankings according to centralmoinfo.com.
The Thunderbird's had every intention of shattering those perceptions, though, and did everything in their power to make that dream a reality, only to end up on the wrong end of a 15-12 decision.
Once the first quarter had came and went with no changes to the scoreboard, Southern Boone swiped its' initial advantage of the contest in the second by going up 7-6. That lead then grew to 15-6 in the third before North Callaway reached the endzone one last time in the fourth, and while that allowed them to make it a three-point game, that's as close as they were going to get.
At the head of the Thunderbird's offensive attack was running back Adam Reno with 20 carries for 115 yards and a score and two catches for 10 yards, fullback Jordan Delashmuttv ran the ball 12 times for 59 yards and a touchdown and quarterback Tully Thomsen completed 8-of-11 passes for 51 yards. While Thomsen, a sophomore, also had six carries for minus-seven yards and was sacked four times in his initial start with the varsity, Austin Edwards came through with five catches for 40 yards and Dawson Wright added a one-yard reception.
For the game, even though Southern Boone completed just three of the 11 passes they attempted for 52 yards, they also ran the ball 36 times for 221 yards. North Callaway, on the other hand, had just 167 rushing yards on 38 carries and 51 passing yards. Compounding this decision is the fact that starting linebacker Tanner Pezold went out with a shoulder injury after the first defensive play of the contest with a shoulder injury. X-rays to determine the extent of this injury will take place early this week.
"I'm very proud of the way this team played their hearts out the entire game. The defense really stepped up," said head coach Kevin O'Neal. "Southern Boone is a really good team, but we have to keep improving."
The Thunderbird's, 0-1 overall, host Tipton on Friday at 7 p.m.
